One advantage of Sozopol is where it sits: roughly in the middle of Bulgaria's southern coast. A river reserve, a Thracian sanctuary, an eccentric castle, a port city and a UNESCO-listed town are all within about an hour. None of these trips needs a dawn start. Here they are, nearest first.
Ravadinovo Castle: half a morning
A few minutes inland from Sozopol, in the village of Ravadinovo, is the castle known as "In Love with the Wind". It is a modern creation. The architect Georgi Tumpalov started building it in 1996 and has been adding to it ever since: towers, a lake, gardens. In 2018 it was voted Bulgaria's tourist attraction of the year. Purists shrug, children love it, and it photographs extremely well. Go when it opens. By late morning in high season the tour coaches have arrived.
Kavatsite and Cape Agalina: the short one
South of town the coast turns wilder quickly. Kavatsite, about 3 km away, is a long sandy beach backed by protected dunes. Cape Agalina, around 6 km from Sozopol, is a protected headland of rock formations with wide views over open sea. The two combine easily: rocks in the cool of the morning, beach in the afternoon. Keep to the marked paths in the dunes.
Ropotamo and Beglik Tash: river and stones
The Ropotamo Reserve lies about 17 km south of Sozopol. It protects the lower course of the Ropotamo river: forest down to the banks, water lilies, rare birds and odd-shaped rocks above the estuary. The usual way to see it is by boat. Trips leave from a landing stage near the main coastal road and take you slowly downstream and back. It is an easy outing with children, and a cool one on a hot day.
A little further on, around 20 km from Sozopol and close to Primorsko, is Beglik Tash. This Thracian megalithic sanctuary was uncovered by archaeologists only in 2003, and it is described as the earliest of its kind found so far on this part of the coast. What you see is a forest clearing filled with enormous rounded boulders, some arranged by human hands for rituals and, it is thought, for observing the sun. Allow an hour.
You need a car for this pair. Do Ropotamo first, Beglik Tash second, and finish with a swim on the way home.
Burgas: a city day
Burgas is about 35 km north of Sozopol. It is also the one trip that works well by public transport: regular buses run to Burgas South bus station, which stands beside the railway station at the foot of the pedestrian centre. From there you can walk everything. The Sea Garden, a long park above the beach, is the city's pride, and the pedestrian streets are lined with cafés. It makes a good plan for a cloudy day.
Burgas has a new claim to attention as well. In May 2027 its arena hosts the Eurovision Song Contest. If you are thinking of coming for that, read our notes on where to stay for Eurovision 2027.
Nessebar: the long one
Nessebar lies on the far side of Burgas, some 70 km from Sozopol. Allow a little over an hour each way. The old town occupies a small rocky peninsula joined to the mainland by a narrow causeway, and it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1983, largely for its medieval churches and its timber houses. Visitors who know Sozopol's old town will recognise the building style, and will notice that Nessebar is busier. Leave early. By midday in July and August the lanes are packed.
Nessebar can also be more than a day trip. We look after apartments in Nessebar and nearby Sveti Vlas too, and some guests split their holiday between the two ends of the bay.
Further afield: Strandzha
With a full day and a car you can reach Strandzha Nature Park, about 60 km away, the largest protected area in Bulgaria: old forests, marked trails and quiet villages. It is a different country from the beach coast, and noticeably cooler in summer.
Practical notes
- Car or bus? Buses are fine for Burgas. For Ropotamo, Beglik Tash and Strandzha a car saves a lot of waiting. Hire cars are easiest to pick up in Burgas or at the airport.
- Season. Boat trips and some smaller sites run to seasonal timetables. In May and October, check before setting off.
- Money. Bulgaria has used the euro since January 2026. Carry some cash for small ticket desks and car parks.
- Pace. One outing a day is enough. The point of staying in Sozopol is being back in time for an evening walk in the old town.
A base in the middle
Our Sozopol apartments are in the Santa Marina holiday village, about 2 km from the old town, with a kitchen for packing a picnic and a balcony for the evening afterwards.
